The world’s biggest and most powerful space telescope rocketed away last December from French Guiana in South America. The pictures on tap include a view of a giant gaseous planet outside our solar system, two images of a nebula where stars are born and die in spectacular beauty and an update of a classic image of five tightly clustered galaxies that dance around each other. Perseverance For this Ukrainian veteran, why Russians fight is still a puzzleĪnd even more is coming Tuesday. “What we saw today is the early universe,” Harvard astronomer Dimitar Sasselov said in a phone interview after the reveal. The busy image with hundreds of specks, streaks, spirals and swirls of white, yellow, orange and red is only “one little speck of the universe,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said. President Joe Biden marveled at the image that he said showed “the oldest documented light in the history of the universe from over 13 billion – let me say that again – 13 billion years ago. Part of the image is light from not too long after the Big Bang, which was 13.8 billion years ago. The “deep field” image released during a brief White House event is filled with lots of stars, with massive galaxies in the foreground, and faint and extremely distant galaxies peeking through here and there. That image will be followed Tuesday by the release of four more galactic beauty shots from the telescope’s initial outward gazes. The first image from the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope is the farthest humanity has ever seen in both time and distance, closer to the dawn of time and the edge of the universe. The first image from NASA’s new space telescope unveiled Monday is brimming with galaxies and offers the deepest look of the cosmos ever captured. Every issue matters deeply to someone, from the pots of gold available in reshuffling in athletic conferences, to the urgency of finding housing to keep students from being homeless.I am honored to be able to present some of these issues to you in the Monitor’s pages, and I hope along the way that you suggest a story or two to me. We will talk about how we can best present these stories to the public. A war on woke education finds new targets daily. With all of this before us, I will travel to California this week to gather with reporters at the Education Writers Association conference on higher education. Financially strapped universities are cutting majors and disciplines. Controversial faculty appointments have been made and rescinded. National security concerns have pushed some campuses to ban TikTok on their public Wi-Fi. Legacy admissions for scions of wealthy or well-connected alumni at some of those same schools were challenged as a result of that same ruling, sending shivers of nervousness to privileged people, too.Artificial intelligence threatens to take away the discovery process of young people studying and figuring out problems on their own by giving them the words to craft would-be research papers. Issues important to higher education seem endless. The United States Supreme Court ended race-based admissions in June, which I’m sure made millions of teenagers of color around the country and the world anxious about whether they would get accepted into dream schools.
